CAN WE TREAT YOU?

Check before you come in

The NHS sets the criteria nationally — if you fall outside them, we will point you to the right service rather than turn you away.

WHO IT'S FOR

Women 16–64

Women aged 16 to 64 with an uncomplicated lower urinary tract infection.

TYPICAL SYMPTOMS
  • Burning or stinging when passing urine
  • Needing to go more often or more urgently
  • Lower tummy (suprapubic) discomfort
  • Cloudy or strong-smelling urine
WHEN WE CAN'T TREAT YOU HERE
  • Men, and anyone under 16 or over 64 (different NHS pathways apply)
  • Pregnancy
  • Fever, shaking or loin/back pain — possible kidney infection, needs urgent care
  • Recurrent UTIs, a urinary catheter, or symptoms lasting more than 7 days

In these cases we will refer you to your GP, NHS 111 or emergency care — whichever your symptoms need.

What treatment involves

Your pharmacist assesses your symptoms against the NHS criteria in our private consultation room. For a confirmed uncomplicated UTI, we can supply a short course of antibiotics under the national protocol immediately — and where symptoms are mild and recent, talk you through the evidence on managing without.

The consultation is free. If a prescription medicine is supplied, the standard NHS prescription charge (currently £9.90 per item) applies unless you are exempt — the same as at your GP.

Three simple steps

1

Walk in or call

No GP referral, no NHS registration needed. Just come in while we're open — or ring ahead to check the quietest time.

2

Private assessment

A trained pharmacist assesses your symptoms against the NHS criteria in our private consultation room — usually 10–15 minutes.

3

Treatment on the spot

Where treatment is clinically appropriate, we supply it there and then — including prescription-only medicines under the national protocol.

URINARY TRACT INFECTION FAQS

Common questions

Yes. Under NHS Pharmacy First, trained pharmacists can assess uncomplicated UTIs in women aged 16–64 and supply antibiotics where clinically indicated — the same day you walk in.

UTIs in men are treated as complicated by the NHS and always need a GP assessment. The same applies to pregnant women, under-16s and over-64s — we will point you to the right route rather than turn you away.

Two or more UTIs in the last six months (or three in a year) needs a GP review to look at prevention properly, rather than another one-off course of antibiotics from us.

Fever, shivering, feeling very unwell, or pain in your back or side can mean the infection has reached the kidneys — that needs urgent medical attention the same day, not a pharmacy consultation.
