THE CONDITION

What is Japanese encephalitis?

Japanese encephalitis (JE) is a viral infection of the brain, spread by mosquitoes across parts of Asia and the Western Pacific. The mosquitoes that carry it feed mainly between dusk and dawn, and are most common in rural areas near rice farming or pig farming, though they are increasingly found in some urban locations too.

For most travellers, the individual risk is low: short-term visitors sticking to towns and cities face an estimated risk of less than one case per million travellers. Risk increases for those spending longer periods in rural areas, taking part in outdoor activities, or travelling during an active outbreak.

Where symptoms do develop, they range from mild flu-like illness to, in rare cases, serious neurological complications. There is no specific cure, so treatment focuses on supporting the patient through the illness — which is why prevention through vaccination and bite avoidance matters for higher-risk travellers.

WHO IT IS FOR

Who should get the Japanese encephalitis vaccine?

Our pharmacist will assess your individual itinerary, but vaccination is generally worth discussing if any of these apply to your trip.

Often not needed

Short city breaks

If you are a short-term visitor sticking to major cities, your pharmacist may advise that bite avoidance alone is sufficient.

We will give you an honest assessment either way — we would rather tell you that you do not need a vaccine than sell you one you will not benefit from.

DOSING & TIMING

Japanese encephalitis vaccine dosing and timing

Standard course

Two doses of Ixiaro, given 28 days apart.

Accelerated course

Where time is short, adults aged 18 to 65 can usually take two doses just seven days apart — still completed at least a week before you travel.

When to book

Ideally four to six weeks before departure. Travelling sooner? Contact us — we will always try to find a way to protect you in the time available.

UK SUPPLY

Japanese encephalitis vaccine availability in Bromley

Japanese encephalitis vaccine (Ixiaro) is currently subject to a nationwide UK supply shortage. National guidance expects stock to recover from September 2026, though some providers, including Caxton Pharmacy, hold current stock.

If you are travelling imminently, we would encourage you to book as early as possible. Where supply is tight, priority is generally given to travellers departing soon and those at higher risk of exposure.

BEYOND THE VACCINE

Protecting yourself beyond the vaccine

No vaccine offers complete protection, so it is worth pairing vaccination with mosquito bite avoidance throughout your trip.

Cover up

Long sleeves and trousers, especially between dusk and dawn when the mosquitoes that carry JE are most active.

Use repellent

A reliable insect repellent containing DEET or an equivalent, reapplied regularly through the day and evening.

Sleep protected

Under a treated mosquito net, or in a properly screened room where one is available.
