Shingles is the chickenpox virus reactivating years after you first had it. The risk climbs steadily from around 50, and so does the chance of being left with nerve pain long after the rash has gone. Our pharmacist can vaccinate you here in Bromley — two doses, no GP referral, no waiting list.
Shingles comes from the same virus as chickenpox. If you had chickenpox as a child, the virus never left — it sits dormant in your nerves, and can reactivate decades later, usually when your immune system is under strain.
The rash itself clears in a few weeks. The problem is what it can leave behind. In some people the nerve pain carries on long after the rash has gone, sometimes for months, occasionally for years. It is called post-herpetic neuralgia, it becomes more likely with age, and there is no reliable way to predict who will get it.
That is the case for not waiting. Shingles risk climbs steadily from around 50, and so does the likelihood that an episode leaves lasting nerve pain behind.
