Who can still get a free NHS COVID vaccination?

The NHS autumn and winter COVID-19 programme runs from 1 October 2026 to 31 January 2027, and is targeted at a small group of people at the highest risk of serious illness.

Free on the NHS

You can still get a free NHS COVID vaccination if you are

  • adults aged 75 and over
  • residents in a care home for older adults
  • anyone aged 6 months and over who is immunosuppressed, as defined in the Green Book

If that is you, you do not need to pay. Book through the NHS App, the NHS website or by calling 119.

Not in those groups?

A private vaccination is how you get protected

If you are not in one of those groups there is no free NHS COVID vaccination available to you this winter — including if you are aged 65 to 74, or have a long-term condition that used to make you eligible.

WHO BOOKS PRIVATELY

Reasons people in Bromley book a private COVID vaccination

Travelling abroad

Some destinations, cruise lines and tour operators still ask for recent COVID vaccination.

Working in health or social care

Frontline staff who want ongoing protection but no longer qualify on the NHS.

Aged 65 to 74

Outside the current NHS groups, but still at raised risk over winter.

Living with someone vulnerable

Reducing the chance of bringing an infection home to a family member at higher risk.

A big event coming up

A wedding, a family gathering, an exam period or a trip you cannot afford to miss.

Simple peace of mind

It has been six months or more since your last dose and you would rather be protected.

Same visit

UK guidance is that a COVID vaccination is usually given no earlier than around six months after your last dose. If it has been less than that, speak to us before booking and we will advise.

Side effects and safety

What most people feel afterwards, how to manage it, and who should speak to us first.

Common, and usually mild

  • Soreness, redness or swelling where the injection was given
  • Tiredness or a headache
  • Muscle aches
  • A mild temperature or chills

These usually settle within a day or two. They are a normal sign that your immune system is responding.

Managing them

Rest, drink plenty of fluids, and take paracetamol if you need it, following the dosage on the pack. Ask us if you are unsure whether paracetamol is suitable alongside your other medicines.

Serious reactions

Serious reactions are very rare. Our pharmacist is trained in managing them and we keep the appropriate emergency equipment on site. If you have ever had a severe allergic reaction to a vaccine, tell us before you book.

If you are pregnant, immunosuppressed, currently unwell with a fever, or have had a severe reaction to a previous dose, please call us on 020 8460 0377 before booking so we can advise you properly.
